Immigration activists reject Cornyn proposal on Dreamers
WASHINGTON – A proposal by Texas U.S. Senator John Cornyn and other GOP senators to provide temporary relief to so-called Dreamers living in the U.S. illegally was shot down Tuesday by a leading immigration rights group opposed to tougher immigration and border measures that would go along with it.
Cornyn's plan, unveiled Tuesday with Iowa GOP Sen. Chuck Grassley, would give three years of legal protection to the estimated 690,000 current Dreamers, or people who were brought into the country illegally as children.
